CLIL 2023 Sustainability, Pedagogy and Social Justice

Laura Quigley (PPLI Education Officer), Gemma Kelly (PPLI
Associate) and Dr Céline Healy (Maynooth University)
presented ‘CLIL in Languages Other than English (and Irish) in
Ireland’ at this World CLIL Conference that focused on
employing CLIL and pluriliteracies pedagogies such as CLIL,
immersion, dual or heritage language programmes, to design
learning for diverse learners in bilingual contexts, in order to
increase motivation, confidence, attainment and intercultural
awareness.

Dr Chang Zhang (PPLI Education Officer) presented alongside
Dr Hongfei Wang (Trinity College Dublin) on exploring the
potential, and limitations, of ChatGPT as a TELL (TechnologyEnhanced Language Learning) facilitator in improving written
production and increasing linguistic awareness for Irish CFL
(Chinese as a Foreign Language) learners.
One School Many Languages: Bridging Research and School Practice through Plurilingual Education
4-6 December 2023 - Eurac Research, Bolzano, Italy
Dr Kenia Puig I Planella (PPLI Teaching and Learning Manager) presented two separate sessions at this
international conference on multilingualism in plurilingual primary and secondary education.
The first was ‘An Intercultural Look at Our Schools: A Framework for School Self-Evaluation’,
which presented the Toolkit developed by PPLI for schools to self-evaluate and support cultural and linguistic
diversity.
The second presentation, ‘Impact of in-service training on teachers’ use of pluralistic approaches and their
identity development’, was a collaboration with Miranda Karjagdi Çolak.
Salvo Cacciato (PPLI Education Officer) also presented ‘Reframing mindsets on foreign language education in
Ireland: Primary Language Sampler Module’ in collaboration with Agnieszka Pedrak (Trinity College Dublin)
on Ireland's multilingual landscape and the recent developments at language policy levels, the introduction
of MFL in the new Primary Framework, and the experience of Say Yes to Languages.
