Four members of the PPLI team presented at this conference.
Dr Kenia Puig i Planella presented on ‘Increasing diversity in MFL teaching in our schools through blended
courses’, Dr Chang Zhang on ‘Initial Teacher Education for new and lesser taught languages in Irish schools’,
and Laura Quigley on ‘CLIL MFL - A pilot approach for post-primary schools in Ireland’.
PPLI Director, Karen Ruddock presented work on the implementation of the Languages Connect Strategy, as
well as research done in this context, as part of a Languages in Education Policy Panel.

Dr Chang Zhang presented with Dr Hongfei Wang
(Trinity College Dublin) ‘From UDL to AEN’ on the
need to address UDL (Universal Design for
Learning) challenges and reconsider the impact of
AEN (Additional Educational Needs), particularly
regarding dyslexia, in the context of provision and
acquisition of new and lesser-taught languages in
Irish schools.
Dr Chang Zhang presented ‘What are the next steps
for Asian languages in Ireland?’ at this conference.
This session discussed Asian languages provision in
Ireland and proposed strategies, including targeted
support for heritage and foreign language learning,
teacher qualification, and reshaping language
learning perceptions within the framework of the
Languages Connect Strategy.

Towards 250 Years of Modern Languages
11 November 2023 – Marino Institute of Education
12 December 2023- Third Level, Royal Irish Academy
Salvo Cacciato gave a workshop ‘Exploiting pupils'
linguistic potential: Say Yes to Languages’. The
session focused on effective strategies for the
development of language awareness and literacy
that leverage pupils' plurilingual repertoires.
Karen Ruddock presented on progress made on
implementation of key actions in the Languages
Connect Strategy in the context of a panel on
‘Taking Stock - Policies, Challenges and
Opportunities’.
