Overview:
In 2023, PPLI continued to work with school senior management teams (SMT), assisting schools with advice
and supports for MFL provision.
Main Aims:
•
Increase awareness amongst school senior management teams of the importance of language learning
for all students
•
Encourage uptake, expansion, and diversification of foreign language options within schools
•
Provide SMTs with the supports they need to enhance language provision
Activity:
Whole-School MFL Support Sessions
Following a review of the programme of SMT advisory sessions, a renewed approach was agreed for the
2023-24 academic year with a focus on supporting schools in which PPLI Language Development Officers are
employed. These new Whole-School MFL Support Sessions continued providing support to school teams by
looking at the school’s overall MFL provision. In addition, the schools’ PPLI-employed Language Development
Officers were supported during the visit through lesson observations and supporting professional dialogue.
Conferences
In 2023, PPLI had exhibition stands and representatives at the Association of Community and Comprehensive
Schools (ACCS) conference in Killarney and the Education and Training Boards of Ireland (ETBI) conference in
Cork, held in March and September 2023 respectively.
PPLI also had an exhibition stand and speakers at the cross-sectoral Le Chéile events held in February, March,
and May.
Impact:
•
Positive feedback was received in relation to the SMT advisory sessions in schools, with participants
commenting that they found the sessions to be thought-provoking and supportive of MFL provision in
their schools
•
Through attending and speaking at the relevant conferences, PPLI had opportunities to network with
school senior management teams and to support them in encouraging uptake, diversification, and
expansion of MFL provision in their schools
