Collaboration with the Inspectorate
Action 3.A.1
40+ Inspectors briefed
Overview:
In 2023 PPLI supported the work of the Inspectorate of the Department of Education through the
development and delivery of a series of supportive sessions for post-primary inspectors, and through our
work with the foreign language assistant (FLA) scheme.
Main Aims:
•
Provide relevant updates to inspectors to support their work in advising schools regarding the provision
of a broad and balanced curriculum
•
Support FLAs through regular collaboration and discussion with the Inspectorate on arising matters
Activity:
Throughout 2023, PPLI worked closely with the Inspectorate to ensure that inspectors would feel confident in
their discussions around language provision in schools during their various evaluative and supportive visits.
In June 2023, a team of PPLI representatives was invited to provide an update meeting to all post-primary
inspectors regarding the Languages Connect strategy.
The focus in this meeting included the provision of information regarding relevant curricular changes and
changes in the landscape of MFL provision within schools, as well as information as to available supports, and to
advise the inspectors as to how they can best assist schools in need of assistance with their Modern Foreign
Language (MFL) provision.
In September 2023, PPLI was again invited to provide an input to newly recruited post-primary inspectors. This
session focused on the identified needs of a newly recruited cohort of inspectors and focussed on supporting
them in the MFL aspect of their work with schools during a variety of inspection models.
Throughout 2023, PPLI also worked closely with the Inspectorate to support our work within the foreign
language assistant scheme. This included joint meetings to support the needs of individual FLAs, as well as
feedback sessions arising out of various meetings within the Department of Education and the relevant sending
agencies in the respective countries with which Ireland has a reciprocal agreement within the scheme.
Impact:
•
As a result of work completed together in 2023, inspectors have an updated awareness of the current
state of play in relation to the implementation of the Languages Connect goals.
•
Through our joint work with the FLA scheme, FLAs have benefitted from support arising out of a model
that is collaborative and cohesive.
Next Steps:
120
•
Develop cross-sectoral work with the Inspectorate, through engaging with inspectors at primary level
with respect to key MFL developments in that sector.
•
Continue to build upon the work completed in 2023, to further engage with post-primary inspectors who
have MFL skills as a specialism
