Gaeltachta & Gaelscolaíochta (COGG)
37 Translations Projects
Action 3.A.1
3 LC Summit Workshops
Overview:
In 2023, PPLI and An Chomhairle um Oideachas Gaeltachta & Gaelscolaíochta (COGG) further developed their
collaborative work across a range of areas including the provision of Senior Management Team (SMT) MFL
support sessions, mutual support for language education at the Languages Connect Summit, and the
development of large resource projects for the Irish medium education sector.
Main Aims:
•
Support Irish medium schools with increased access for students to MFL resources in the Irish language.
•
Support the dissemination of key Languages Connect messages to relevant stakeholders employed in the
Irish medium sector.
Activity:
In February 2023, a meeting was held in Limerick between PPLI and COGG’s team of Education Officers to
provide an overview and update of the implementation of the Languages Connect Strategy. This proved to
be an ideal opportunity for discussion and the sharing of ideas. This was followed, in March 2023, by the
holding of a joint Senior Management Team (SMT) MFL Advisory Session, held at Castleisland Community
College, Co. Kerry. Through these events, COGG and PPLI had opportunities to learn more about the nature
and practices of each other’s work.
Work was progressed on several significant translation projects, including ILAOS, school exchanges and the
Irish language version of the ‘Say Yes to Languages’ Open Night Toolkit. This latter resource was then
designed, published, and two copies were delivered to each of the 81 Irish-medium schools in August 2023.
This allowed prospective students of Irish medium schools to engage in activities at school open nights that
support language uptake. Building on this work, COGG and PPLI then provided an Irish language evening
event in September 2023 to develop awareness and to support teachers in effectively using the toolkit and
exploring its many potential uses.
In October 2023, COGG played a significant role at the Languages Connect Summit, offering workshops to
interested parties through the Irish language on a range of areas including teaching and learning resources
and supports for MFL education within the Irish medium schools. COGG played a pivotal role also in
promoting the Summit to stakeholders within the Irish medium sector.
PPLI and COGG also worked jointly with Careers Portal to further enhance the availability of materials in Irish
on the site, to increase access for students in Irish medium schools to relevant content to promote languages.
PPLI, through its programme of support for FLAs, worked also with FLAs in the Irish medium schools and with
the relevant sending agencies to offer advice and support as appropriate.
