Why is CLIL Worth the Hype?
Dr Marisa Pérez Cañado, Professor at the Department of English Philology of the University of Jaén, Spain,
where Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) has been in place for a long time, was invited due to
her expertise in the CLIL area, a key focus in the strategy. Andalusia has been at the forefront of implementing
bilingual education programs that incorporate CLIL.
In her keynote Why is CLIL Worth the Hype? she emphasised the relevance of CLIL to all language teachers and
highlighted the importance of integrating language learning with subject content. She introduced CLIL, its
assets, challenges, and solutions to respond to the challenges described. The key takeaways included how
linguistic outcomes in CLIL programs are hugely successful, why misgivings regarding content learning
should be dismissed, and how engaging in CLIL develops soft skills and key competencies such as critical
thinking, risk-taking, interpersonal abilities, and intercultural competence which lead to better preparation for
societal demands.
