#ThinkLanguages on Campus
A hugely successful addition to this year’s celebrations was the involvement Higher Education Institutions
(HEIs) across the country. The activity within the HEIs proved to be a highlight for many, with a diverse range
of activities taking place on campus for TY students to engage in. Over 1,600 students visited a university
campus, with many more gaining insights into third-level life through talks from student language
ambassadors who visited individual schools.
Dublin City University kicked off the celebrations
during #ThinkLanguages Week with Spanish,
German and French taster classes as well as
a Salsa dance tutorial for schools from across
Dublin. They continued hosting workshops for 190
students across the entire week of
#ThinkLanguages, with taster sessions such as
French comics, Japanese etiquette, and Kung Fu
workshop.
Maynooth University hosted over 150 students
across the week. Students were given a campus
tour and presentations from staff; they visited
lectures and were also taken on a tour of the
library. Taster sessions in Chinese, German, French
and Spanish were followed by lunch in the Pugin
Hall and an opportunity to speak to student
language ambassadors.
Munster Technological University (MTU) sent
student language ambassadors to five schools
during #ThinkLanguages Week.
South-East Technological University put on a
show for over 110 students with international
music from around the world. They then hosted an
Italian, Chinese and Brazilian cookery demo for the
students. Students were also given an opportunity
to speak to student language ambassadors. Staff
members visited three schools and student
language ambassadors visited a further three
schools.
Technological University Dublin welcomed
students on campus during #ThinkLanguages
Week, where they were given a tour of campus and
took part in workshops and taster classes in a
variety of languages, including Chinese, French,
Italian and Spanish. Student language
ambassadors were also sent out to nine schools.
Trinity College Dublin hosted students on campus
during #ThinkLanguages Week. The students were
given a tour of the campus and attended talks
where they heard about careers with languages,
what it was like to study languages at TCD, and
how to access relevant supports. They also had an
opportunity to speak to student language
ambassadors.
University College Cork hosted over 200 students
throughout the week. Workshops available
included a taste of Italian Christmas, interactive
language lectures, and language taster sessions.
Students also were given a tour of the campus. A
staff member also visited two schools as part of
#ThinkLanguages Week.
University College Dublin hosted over 370
students during #ThinkLanguages Week, with
meetings with final year language students to
discover more about the opportunity to study
abroad on Erasmus, as well as Arabic, Korean,
Russian and Swahili workshops, giving the
students a diverse range of options. Students were
also given a campus tour and had an opportunity
to speak to student language ambassadors. Staff
visited five schools and student language
ambassadors visited six schools.
University of Galway provided several workshops
for 150 students in Spanish, German, Italian and
French, before hosting a language-based treasure
hunt and campus tour for the students.
University of Limerick hosted a talk by the TikTok
star Killian Sundermann on the importance of
languages for over 160 students and gave them an
insight into what it is like studying languages on
UL campus. They also sent student language
ambassadors to visit schools throughout the rest
of #ThinkLanguages Week.
Technological University of the Shannon sent
staff members out to four schools and student
language ambassadors out to two schools during
#ThinkLanguages week.
