Action: 3.A.1
3.B.2
13 HEIs supported
Overview:
Under the Languages Connect awareness campaign, funding is provided to Higher Education Institutions
(HEI) for the promotion of language learning at third level.
Main Aims:
•
Strengthen links between HEIs and schools to support language learning and cultural awareness
•
Promote language courses at third level – as major, minor, and elective subjects
•
Raise awareness of career opportunities and opportunities for studying abroad
Activity:
The fourth call for HEI Languages Connect awareness-raising funding applications was made in May 2023. 13
HEIs applied and were granted funding up to a maximum of €10K. PPLI granted the HEIs different amounts
of funding based on the proposals submitted, and it was used to support a variety of activities to raise
awareness of the courses offered by the HEIs and to promote different languages to their students and
second-level prospective students.
HEIs were involved in #ThinkLanguages week in November/December by hosting over 1,600 second level
students on campus and providing student language ambassadors or staff members to schools. PPLI
facilitated communication between schools and HEIs to help coordinate visits. More details on the
#ThinkLanguages activity are available in the previous section. Below are some of the main activities that
were supported during the rest of the year.

Three new promotional language videos were commissioned to showcase the importance of choosing to
study a language at third level. Each video has a different theme, and the participants of the videos are
recent graduates of ATU. The three themes are Erasmus exchange, work placement, and career
opportunities.

The ‘ATU Languages Competition’ was continued for 2022/2023 due to its success in the previous
academic year. Participating schools were asked to submit a video in either French/German/Spanish on
one of a variety of topics. The awards ceremony was held in April 2023. There was a first, second, and third
prize in each category. First prize was a full day of interactive culinary workshops in the target language
for the winning class group.
