Applied Languages @25: A celebration of multilingual studies was organized as a hybrid event that took
place in August. The one-day event was designed to put a focus on the alumni voice, to celebrate
multilingual studies at UL and alumni achievement.
•
‘Promoting Languages to Guidance Counsellors’ was an on-campus event in December that updated
guidance counsellors from the Midwest branch of the Institute of Guidance Counsellors about
opportunities for language learners at all levels. The event included a campus tour, including tour of
Language Learning Hub/Language Building facilities, sessions on advantages of language learning,
programmes on offer across UL, Languages Connect, Erasmus+; and opportunities to meet with student
ambassadors and faculty.
Impact:
•
MTU have noted a 30% increase in CAO applications for their BA (Hons) in International Business with a
Language programme. They believe this is due in large part to the student language ambassador initiative
supported by the funding.
•
Third level students and lecturers have engaged with both post-primary students and primary pupils
through open days, competitions, and classes and workshops in schools.
•
Post-primary students gain an understanding and interest in languages at third level when they visit a
campus and learn about university life, studying a language and going abroad on Erasmus.
•
Promotional videos can be used on social media and have the potential to reach a much wider audience
than an open day, both in terms of numbers and different target audiences, e.g. parents and teachers as
well as students.
