Action:
4 Schools Received Irish Language Toolkits
3.A.2
8 Support Sessions
Overview:
The Say 'Yes' to Languages Open Night Toolkit provides a suite of resources for teachers planning to host
open nights within their schools. Through a range of engaging taster activities, the toolkit aims to support
uptake of modern foreign languages (MFLs) in MFL subject areas at Junior Cycle. In 2023, an Irish version of
the toolkit was developed and distributed. Online and in-person sessions were also provided to support
teachers in how to use the toolkit.
Main Aims:
•
Support teachers in preparing engaging activities and presentations for open nights
•
Help teachers promote uptake of MFLs in their schools and encourage prospective incoming first-year
students to Say ‘Yes’ to Languages when choosing their Junior Cycle subjects
Activity:
In collaboration with COGG (An Chomhairle um Oideachas Gaeltachta & Gaelscolaíochta), significant work
took place in 2023 to create, design, publish and raise awareness of the Irish language version of the Open
Night Toolkit. In August 2023, two Irish language copies of the toolkit were sent to every Irish-medium postprimary school in Ireland. Two English language copies of the toolkit had been distributed to schools two
years ago and had also been distributed at key teacher, guidance, and senior management events.
To support teachers in their use of the toolkit, a series of five sessions were delivered in September 2023 at
venues across the country. Three online sessions were also provided, including one through Irish with thanks
to a collaboration with COGG.
