Chinese
To support Chinese heritage language learners and
their parents, PPLI met with the Education Section
of the Chinese Embassy in May 2023 to discuss
supports for Chinese learning opportunities in
schools. The embassy provided additional support
by disseminating information about the Leaving
Certificate programme to Chinese parents and
providing information on Chinese scholarships for
higher education. PPLI collaborated with the
Confucius Institute to support induction and
continuing professional development (CPD) for
their new teaching staff and to support events, such
as the Chinese Language and Culture Competition
for Primary and Post-Primary students. In November
2023, PPLI also met with a delegation from the
Centre for Language Education and Cooperation (previously known as the Confucius Institute Headquarters)
to discuss the context and opportunities in relation to the further development of Chinese education in Irish
post-primary schools.
French
The Languages Connect Summit in October 2023 provided an opportunity for the 171 Foreign Language
Assistants (FLAs), almost half of whom were French nationals, to learn more about the Irish education system
and to meet with representatives from the French embassy. In November 2023, to celebrate “Journée
Internationale du professeur de français”, PPLI was also delighted to participate in an online event aimed at
celebrating teachers of French from all education sectors.
