German
PPLI engaged in several meetings with the
Goethe Institute in 2023 to discuss opportunities
for collaboration, looking at supports for the
FLAs, and how to promote the development of
exchange programmes between Ireland and
Germany. PPLI representatives also collaborated
with the Goethe Institute, the German Foreign
Ministry, and with the German sending agency
for the FLAs, Der Pädagogische Austauschdienst,
for various meetings in Germany. These meetings
looked at how best to support the FLAs and how
to further promote German as a school subject.
Japanese
The Japan Foundation continued to provide a
dedicated Japanese Language Advisor to PPLI.
The advisor is seconded to PPLI to support
Japanese language education in Ireland,
providing CPD and language upskilling to
teachers, and resources and materials to
support the teaching and learning of
Japanese. PPLI engaged regularly in
Japanese-focused events. For example, a PPLI
information session was provided to predeparture Japan Exchange and Teaching
(JET) programme participants encouraging
them to learn Japanese and to consider a
teaching career upon their return to Ireland.
PPLI assisted in the conducting of the
Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT)
at University College Dublin (UCD), the JLTI
Japanese Speech Contest, and the annual
Experience Japan culture event, which was particularly useful in the context of disseminating information
about PPLI Saturday classes. PPLI also supported the embassy at events attended by politicians and
community groups with briefings and information on Japanese language learning opportunities and
possibilities in Ireland.
Korean
PPLI continued its collaboration with the Korean Embassy to support their work of promoting Korean
language and culture in post-primary schools and beyond. The embassy facilitated relevant cultural input as
part of the delivery of the TY module provided by PPLI in schools. Korean language taster classes were offered
to members of the public during Culture Night. The Korean classes were delivered by the PPLI Korean
Language Development Officer and were very popular.
