Action 1.C.3
15 FLA-CT sessions
Overview:
PPLI has a growing role in the Foreign Language Assistant (FLA) scheme and provides a wide range of
teaching and learning supports to FLAs and their Cooperating Teachers (CTs). In 2023, PPLI organised and
managed, for the first time, the FLA induction on behalf of the Department of Education. This was a vibrant
and key component of the inaugural Languages Connect Summit, held in October 2023.
Main aims:
•
Provide support for a high-quality teaching and learning experience for the students and schools who
have secured the services of an FLA for the academic year
•
Disseminate effective teaching and learning approaches that contribute to an engaging learning
environment
•
Secure the best possible learning outcomes for students, by encouraging planning for success and
innovation in teaching and learning practices
Activity:
In March 2023, PPLI hosted an online event to encourage the development of links, through the FLA-CT
scheme, between Irish schools and schools in the target language countries. At this event, a number of
schools outlined the exciting work that they have done in this area to support other schools to work with
their FLAs to build connections with schools in the target language countries.
In May 2023, PPLI hosted an information session, with the Department of Education and the Inspectorate, for
schools that had been successful in their FLA applications for the 2023-24 academic year. This session focused
on providing relevant personnel in schools with important pre-arrival supports to prepare for the arrival of
their FLA.
