Spotlight on Schools
Action 1.C.1
3 Reports
Overview:
The Spotlight on Schools series showcases best practice of Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) departments and
teachers from across Ireland. Each spotlight is laid out in a practical way to communicate and showcase these
exemplars.
Main Aims:
•
Showcase some of the great work being done in MFL education in Irish schools
•
Share best practice among the MFL teacher community
•
Encourage MFL teachers to learn from each other
•
Encourage support for, and dissemination of, innovative teaching methodologies
Activity:
Three different ideas were showcased in Spotlight on Schools during 2023:
1. Promoting Inclusion at Beech Hill College
This project aims to tackle educational
disadvantage in languages by promoting
inclusion through the celebration of
culture, language, and heritage by
partnering up with an Erasmus +
Programme.
2. Creating Cross-Curricular Learning Experiences at Ardscoil Rís
The project drew on students’ target language skills and their pluricultural competence through a
simulated first-person immersive experience.
3. Using Culture Box at Gorey Community School
A ‘Culture Box’ is a teaching and learning tool that connects different cultures and expands possibilities in
the teaching and learning of other languages. It is also a cross-cultural communication tool that links the
students’ knowledge of language and culture to the world outside the classroom.
Impact:
•
Exemplars of best practice are available for teachers to support self-led CPD
•
Positive feedback from the MFL teacher community and beyond
Next Steps:
•
Showcase additonal Spotlight on Schools planned in 2024
•
Extend the showcase to best practice in the primary context, e.g., the primary language sampler module
