55 PPLI teachers
Overview:
Throughout 2023, PPLI maintained its commitment to offering sustained support to teachers of new and
lesser-taught languages. Comprehensive CPD sessions were conducted through both face-to-face
interactions and online platforms, addressing a range of topics based on the identified needs expressed by
the teachers.
Main Aims:
•
Improve and maintain the quality of language provision
•
Support implementation of new Leaving Certificate language specifications
•
Support teachers’ needs in CPD, peer collaboration and well-being
•
Support teachers in delivering face-to-face, online, and blended learning language classes
Activity:
School visits and classroom observations continue to be the primary means of supporting existing teachers
of new languages (Polish, Lithuanian, Portuguese, and Mandarin Chinese). In 2023, a focused effort was
initiated to assist teachers in adopting a whole-school approach. This involved providing guidance on
pedagogy through classroom observations and facilitating subject development through engagements with
school management and colleagues such as the MFL coordinators, Guidance Counsellors, and Special
Educational Needs Coordinators.
To address identified needs of teachers, CPD sessions were conducted covering areas such as the Common
European Framework of Reference for Languages, curriculum review, Community of Practice, and peer
observation. CPD and workshops were organised to support teachers in navigating blended and online
