Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) Communities of Practice
Over 35 Communities of Practice
Action 1.C.5
300 teachers attended
Overview:
PPLI Communities of Practice (CoPs) are
meetings of teachers who share a common
interest in languages and language teaching
who come together regularly to share best
practice, create new knowledge, and exchange
ideas. PPLI facilitates regional CoPs across
Ireland through collaboration with local
Education Centres and schools. The activities of
each Community of Practice depend on the
participants and are based on mutual respect
and trust, which encourages a willingness to
share ideas, discuss challenges, ask questions,
listen to others, and solve problems.
Main Aims:
•
Build and establish regional communities of MFL teachers in Ireland
•
Facilitate a space for MFL teachers to come together and share best practice
Activity:
PPLI Associates facilitated in-person and online CoPs throughout the country.
CoPs, in response to the needs of MFL teachers, have shifted to include a thematic focus allowing teachers to
attend sessions which best meet their individual needs.
CoPs dedicated to supporting projects guided or supported by PPLI, such as promoting languages using the
Open Night Toolkit, the Foreign Language Assistant scheme, ILAOS (Intercultural Look at our Schools), and
#ThinkLanguages were particularly well attended.
Impact:
•
Networking of MFL teachers leading to opportunities for sharing and collaboration
•
Meaningful exchange on topics which are of interest to specific regions
•
Increased motivation and enthusiasm for language teaching through shared
experiences and success stories within CoPs
Next Steps:
50
•
Survey MFL teachers to establish emerging needs
•
Organise thematic CoPs to provide a forum for teachers to exchange on these topics
