Overview:
Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is a dual-focused educational approach in which an
additional language is used for the teaching and learning of both content and language. PPLI is working with
both in-service and pre-service teachers to enhance CLIL provision in Ireland.
2023 saw the culmination of a two-year pilot project that PPLI introduced in 2021 and an independent
evaluation report was commissioned to explore the potential of using CLIL to support and reinforce foreign
language learning in Ireland.
Further to the pilot for in-service teachers, 2023 CLIL activity also included pre-service teachers from seven
initial teacher education (ITE) providers being invited to an intensive one-day CLIL workshop, facilitated by
PPLI, in Maynooth University.
Both in-service and pre-service teachers also had the opportunity to learn more about CLIL through the
Languages Connect Summit which featured CLIL as a central theme. Expert, Prof. María Luisa Pérez Cañado,
delivered a keynote address on ‘Is CLIL worth the hype?’ and gave an overview of the linguistic, cognitive,
methodological, and socioeconomic advantages that CLIL offers to students. Dedicated CLIL workshops were
also provided throughout the day by PPLI associate, Gemma Kelly, and MFL teacher, Clotilde de Fréin, who
previously participated in PPLI CLIL upskilling. A poster highlighting PPLI’s work on CLIL was also on display.
