Activity:
CLIL for in-service teachers
The pilot project for in-service teachers aimed to develop provision and practice of CLIL in MFL classrooms in
Ireland. As part of the project, a six-week CLIL module on Fair Trade, available in French, Spanish, German, and
Italian was developed. The CLIL module includes Teacher Support Documents, Student Worksheets, and
PowerPoint presentations. PPLI provided professional learning for teachers, comprising of a one-day inperson training event and three online evening sessions.
Upon completion of the pilot, a research report was undertaken to evaluate the project. For the report, the
independent evaluation team from Sheffield Hallam University Prof. Kim Bower and Dr Dee Rutjers, visited
lessons in participating schools to contextualise focus group interviews. They then undertook student focus
groups in different schools to reflect the range of contexts and facilitated two online teacher focus groups. An
online survey was completed by a wider range of students, involved in the CLIL lessons, across participating
schools. Findings were analysed against the themes of learning environment, learner engagement and
learner identity, drawn from the Process Motivation Model (PMM) framework for investigating CLIL (Bower,
2017). The analysis also focused on teachers’ experiences with implementing CLIL, including the challenges
they faced.
CLIL for pre-service teachers
In September 2023, PPLI facilitated a CLIL upskilling day for 70 ITE students at Maynooth University.
Attendees included future language teachers from Year 4 of undergraduate education programmes (BEds),
and postgraduate masters in education students (PMEs) from University College Dublin, Dublin City
University, Trinity College Dublin, University of Limerick, University College Cork, University of Galway, and
Maynooth University.
