This workshop consisted of plenary and breakout sessions and focussed on the fundamentals of CLIL,
experiencing a CLIL lesson, planning CLIL activities, and looking at CLIL in action in other similar contexts.
Following the success of the day, meetings were held with ITE providers to look at repeating the day for
future student cohorts and options for including CLIL in ITE programmes were explored.
Dissemination of CLIL activity
PPLI participated in both the ‘Language and Education Policy in Ireland’ and ‘World CLIL’ conferences. At both
events, the PPLI pilot approach for CLIL MFL in post-primary schools in Ireland was presented. Following the
success of the World CLIL conference, PPLI made a successful bid to host World CLIL 2025 in Ireland as part of
a consortium with Maynooth University and Queen’s University Belfast.
Impact:

The evaluation found that the CLIL approach appealed to students and increased their confidence in a
range of skills, enabling them to make good or better progress. Both the CLIL approach and the positive
experience of learning and achieving in this way proved highly motivating. It was therefore
recommended that CLIL is made available to more students, both in TY and within the other curricular
programmes in post-primary education, such as Junior Cycle, the established Leaving Certificate, or the
other Leaving Certificate programmes, such as the Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA), or the Leaving
Certificate Vocational Programme (LCVP).

The CLIL workshop for ITE students extended the reach from just in-service teachers to those preparing to
start their language teaching careers. Embedding CLIL as an approach at this stage increases their
awareness of the benefits and encourages them to add CLIL to their pedagogical toolkits.

CLIL was a central focus of the Languages Connect Summit and with such high attendance for language
stakeholders, awareness of CLIL has significantly increased. Expressions of interest in CLIL upskilling have
doubled since the Summit was held.
