33 Class Groups
Overview:
PPLI facilitates Saturday classes to support students who wish to take lesser-taught curricular languages for
the Leaving Certificate that are not accessible to them in their regular school setting.
Main Aims:
•
Increase the uptake of more recently added and lesser-taught languages at Senior Cycle
•
Provide equity of access to languages curricula that are not available in many schools due to lack of
critical mass of students
•
Provide opportunities for students with home and heritage languages other than English and Irish, to
access Leaving Certificate classes in these languages
Activity:
Classes are provided in a variety of languages online and at venues in Dublin, Cork, and Galway mostly on
Saturday mornings. These are attended by just under 650 students in 33 class groups of fifth and sixth year
students. The students are given the opportunity to prepare for the Leaving Certificate exams covering the
full curriculum. Japanese and Polish online classes were introduced in September 2023. There was a high
demand for Polish which resulted in the formation of two 5th year groups.
