Action 2.A.4
6 Teachers
6 Schools
4 Saturday Classes
Overview:
PPLI supports Romanian language classes to enhance provision in schools, and to encourage more students
to maintain and develop literacy in their home or heritage language. This is organised in two ways – either
through financial support for schools, in which case the school recruits a teacher, or directly through PPLIorganised Saturday classes.
Main Aims:
•
Support provision of Romanian language classes in post-primary schools where there is a critical mass of
Romanian speaking students
•
Provide wider access to Romanian through the provision of Romanian Leaving Certificate
Saturday classes
Activity:
In 2023, funding was provided to four post-primary schools in Dublin, enabling them to acquire materials and
organise Romanian language classes for over a hundred Senior Cycle students. This marked a significant
increase from the two schools supported in 2022. These classes supported 115 students in their preparation
for the non-curricular Romanian Leaving Certificate exam.
There was also an increase in demand for places in PPLI-run Romanian Saturday classes. A second teacher
was recruited, and in 2023, four classes were facilitated. These Leaving Certificate Saturday classes in Dublin
were attended by 118 students in 2023.
To support language learners, in 2023 PPLI developed a Romanian language mat and a Romanian
fun fold-out for use in the classroom to encourage communication in the target language.
Impact:
•
Providing Romanian classes in school encourages more students to maintain their home language and to
sit the Romanian Leaving Certificate exam. While Romanian is a non-curricular subject, the number of
students attending Romanian Saturday classes increases each year.
•
The number of students who sit the Romanian Leaving Certificate exam has increased from 237 in 2020 to
367 in 2023
•
Students have gained a deeper understanding of their culture and traditions through the improvement of
their Romanian language skills
