Overview:
In 2023, there were approximately 300 students in Junior Cycle and 1,400 students learning Mandarin
Chinese in Transition Year modules delivered by PPLI teachers. Over a hundred students were studying
Chinese as a Leaving Certificate subject in their own schools, within their local learning community,
participating in face-to-face Saturday classes, or collaborating with peers nationwide in an online setting. PPLI
has also continued to engage with stakeholders at all levels in developing Chinese teaching and learning
capacity through engagement with Initial Teacher Education (ITE) and Continuing Professional Development
(CPD) programmes, presentations at academic and public events and conducting awareness-raising
campaigns.
Main Aims:
•
Improve the quality of Chinese provision in schools
•
Increase the uptake of Chinese at all levels in schools
•
Provide CPD and professional support for in-service Chinese teachers and teacher candidates
•
Advance the establishment of Initial Teacher Education to qualify Chinese teachers
•
Assist students and parents with queries and resources related to the Chinese curriculum
Activity:
Chinese language provision
Throughout 2023, PPLI played a pivotal role in enhancing Chinese
language education across both regular school timetables and
Saturday classes. PPLI teachers dedicated themselves to a holistic
approach to language acquisition, intertwining cultural teachings
with linguistic skills, thereby fostering a deep-rooted
understanding and appreciation of plurilingual and pluricultural
competencies among their students. This comprehensive
approach allowed students to immerse themselves in the Chinese
language and culture, marking an important milestone for many
in their educational journey. Feedback gathered from schools
and students highlighted the positive impact of these initiatives.
Notably, students enrolled in Leaving Certificate Chinese courses reported impressive
achievements, with a shift their initial attitudes towards the language. Many students reflected on the course
as being more engaging and far less intimidating than anticipated, contributing to a transformative learning
experience.
