Support for Chinese Teachers
The PPLI Chinese teachers have achieved significant professional growth, which has led to increased
collaboration and a diversification of their pedagogical interests and capabilities. Supported by PPLI, these
teachers have initiated a variety of cooperative projects. These projects include the design and
implementation of mock examinations, participation in SLAR (Subject, Learning, and Assessment Review)
meetings, and the organisation of school-based events and workshops leveraging their unique skills.
Additionally, they have worked together to create resources aimed at enhancing student exposure to the
Chinese language. In response to the opening of registration for new languages by the Teaching Council in
2023, PPLI has also facilitated the registration process for teachers, further professionalising Chinese language
education and enriching the learning environment for students.
Engagement with stakeholders
PPLI values the expertise from both internal and external stakeholders in enhancing the teaching and
learning of foreign languages. To advance this goal, PPLI has been active in researching ITE for Chinese and
other lesser taught languages in Ireland. Findings have been shared through conference presentations, with
an aim to encourage ITE providers and Chinese language experts to build a sustainable and future-oriented
foundation for Chinese language education. Collaborations have been established with Chinese and Asian
studies departments in higher education, cultural institutes, and the teaching community, with a focus on
offering induction and CPD for Chinese language teachers, organising language summer camps, engaging in
pedagogical research, and participating in academic conferences and public events.
Awareness-Raising Campaign
Languages Connect has launched campaigns across various social media platforms to promote Chinese and
MFL studies. A specific section of the Languages Connect website is dedicated to Chinese, providing valuable
information for students, parents, and others interested in Chinese language opportunities available in
schools and Saturday classes. This section covers essential details about the curriculum, state examinations,
higher education prospects, and the practical use of Chinese in different professional settings.
