PPLI has continued to adapt to a constantly evolving landscape. 2023 involved preparation for another move
and we are now based in The Grainstore in Roe Lane at the Digital Hub (Thomas Street).
There was so much to celebrate in 2023. The Languages Connect Summit was the culmination of many years of
work and an opportunity to facilitate the dissemination of a wealth of good practice from classrooms around
the country and a diverse range of resources and ideas. It was also an opportunity to celebrate languages and
to focus on the messaging of both the Languages Connect strategy and the awareness raising campaign
empowering teachers as partners in implementation. Teachers came from every county in Ireland, and also
represented were the MFL teachers of the future, colleagues from the HEIs, embassies and cultural institutes,
and all the Foreign Language Assistants who completed their induction as part of the event. Such was the
enthusiasm that #LanguagesConnect trended above #COYBIG and IrevsNZ on X, formerly known as Twitter, on
the day that Ireland played in the Rugby World Cup quarter final.
In the context of the ‘Say Yes to Languages’ primary sampler module fifteen different languages are now being
learned in 1,200 schools by eighty-four thousand pupils over an eight-week period. We continue to experience
the joy and sense of pride that pupils showed as they learnt something new about each other's languages and
cultures and the faces of pupils showing off their multiple languages and cultures. Seeing primary school
teachers gathering to be upskilled in a language that they will deliver as part of the new Modern Foreign
Language (MFL) curriculum was also a highlight.
