Impact:

Japanese Leaving Certificate school and student numbers have remained steady. 277 students are taking
part in Japanese Leaving Certificate classes in post-primary schools and 113 students in 5th and 6th year
access PPLI Japanese Saturday classes in Dublin, Cork and online.
•
When TY is included, 2,313 students are learning Japanese language in Senior Cycle
•
Junior Cycle Japanese classes were introduced by PPLI four years ago and have been running in three
schools, with a total of 123 students taking part
•
The number of primary schools participating in ‘Say Yes to Languages’ and choosing Japanese has
significantly increased from 2 schools in 22/23 to 13 schools in 23/24
Next Steps:
•
Continue provision of Japanese language classes in 2024
•
Recruit and train new teachers and Foreign Language Assistants
•
Continue to deliver CPD support to all teachers
