Overview:
PPLI supports the provision of Portuguese language through Transition Year and online Leaving Certificate
classes.
Main Aims:
•
Provide students with an opportunity to maintain Portuguese as a heritage language and sit their Leaving
Certificate examination.
•
Give TY students the opportunity to engage with a new language.
Activity:
Leaving Certificate Classes were introduced as a pilot in the 2021-2023 academic years. Students sitting their
Leaving Certificate in 2023 were the first cohort to have completed this course.
Following the success of the pilot, it was decided to continue with the roll out of this model of provision in
the coming academic years.
PPLI work in collaboration with H2 Learning to implement the online course. The classes take place every
Saturday during term time for three hours. PPLI also liaise with the relevant embassies to promote and
disseminate the opportunities for the teaching and learning of Portuguese. Portuguese Development
Officers presented at the Languages Connect Summit organised in October 2023. Their presentation
discussed dealing with differentiation in the online Portuguese classroom.
Supporting the delivery of Portuguese classes in Transition Years allows students to experience learning a
new language and a new culture. They can use their previous experience of language learning to build on the
learning of Portuguese. With the increasing number of Portuguese speakers in our schools, the TY Portuguese
classes contribute to inclusion and the development of intercultural competences.
PPLI supports the Development Officers who deliver both LC and TY these classes by providing CPD
opportunities, facilitating communities of practice and ongoing mentoring.
