Overview:
PPLI provides Russian language classes in postprimary schools at Senior Cycle and offers
Russian Leaving Certificate Saturday classes in
both Dublin and Galway. PPLI also supports
Junior Cycle classes in one school through
additional allocation.
Main Aims:
•
Respond to the evolving student needs for Russian language classes
•
Provide an opportunity for students, most of whom are heritage speakers, to access the language as a
Leaving Certificate subject through the delivery of Russian Leaving Certificate Saturday classes
Activity:
PPLI works with schools to support the introduction of Russian language classes, employing teachers of
Russian to work at Senior Cycle level. The PPLI Teaching and Learning Team provides CPD and support to the
teachers; for example, in 2023, teachers of Russian attended the Languages Connect Summit in Dublin in
October and benefitted also from the introduction of support visits from PPLI to their lessons.
Russian language classes were delivered by PPLI in eight schools nationwide to a total of 506 students in
2023. In 2023, 425 students attended Russian TY classes to learn about the Russian language and culture.
81 students took part in Russian Leaving Certificate classes during 2023.
Impact:
•
521 students sat the Leaving Certificate Russian exam in 2023, which was a significant increase on 2022,
with many students achieving excellent results.
•
84 students in 5th and 6th year access PPLI Russian Saturday classes in Dublin and Galway
•
Students are supported in their overall well-being and maintenance of their heritage language.
Next Steps:
•
Develop Russian language provision in line with evolving needs
•
Investigate development of an online Saturday class to better support learners living outside the main
urban centres
