Overview:
PPLI provides Lithuanian language classes in post-primary schools at Junior Cycle, Transition Year and Leaving
Certificate levels, and offers Lithuanian Leaving Certificate Saturday classes in Dublin.
Main Aims:
•
Provide Lithuanian language classes for students in mainstream post-primary schools
•
Provide an opportunity for students, most of whom are heritage speakers, to access the language as a
Leaving Certificate subject through the delivery of Lithuanian Leaving Certificate Saturday classes.
Activity:
PPLI works with schools to support the introduction and expansion of Lithuanian language classes. PPLI
employs two Lithuanian teachers who teach classes at Transition Year and Senior Cycle level. The PPLI
Teaching and Learning Team provides CPD and support to the Lithuanian teachers. Classes include Junior
Cycle short course classes, TY language modules and Leaving Certificate courses. Lithuanian language classes
were delivered by PPLI in two schools and one Saturday class to a total of 238 students in 2023.
60 students in Beech Hill College in Monaghan are learning Lithuanian through the Junior Cycle and Senior
Cycle courses, and TY module. 129 students in Bremore Educate Together Secondary School are taking part in
TY Lithuanian modules. 52 students are taking part in Lithuanian Leaving Certificate classes, 27 of whom
attend PPLI Saturday classes in Dublin.
Teachers of Lithuanian attended the Languages Connect Summit in Dublin in October 2023. One of the
teachers prepared a poster for the Languages Connect Summit, describing the involvement of her school Beech Hill College - in the Erasmus+ project. Students and teachers went to Lithuania as part of this project.
