Overview:
PPLI provides Polish language classes in post-primary schools at Junior Cycle, Transition Year, and Leaving
Certificate levels, and offers Polish Leaving Certificate Saturday classes in person in Dublin, Cork, and Galway.
In September 2023 PPLI also started offering two online Leaving Certificate Saturday classes.
Main Aims:
•
Provide Polish language classes for students in mainstream post-primary schools.
•
Provide an opportunity for students, most of whom are heritage speakers, to access the language as a
Leaving Certificate subject through the delivery of Polish Leaving Certificate Saturday classes.
•
Foster cross-cultural understanding and integration by offering Polish language classes to non-native
speakers in post-primary schools.
Activity:
PPLI employs 14 Polish teachers who teach a combination of short courses and full courses at Junior Cycle, TY
modules, and Leaving Certificate classes. Two Polish teachers are employed directly by the schools and Polish
teaching hours are supported via the additional allocation scheme. The PPLI Teaching and Learning Team
provide CPD and support to the teachers.
Polish language classes were delivered by PPLI in 29 schools nationwide and in eight Saturday classes with a
total of 1,763 students in 2023. PPLI works with students, parents, and schools to support the introduction
and expansion of Polish language classes. In 2023, there was an increase in the number of students
participating in classes from 1,486 to 1,763 - an increase of 277 students.
Approximately 319 students in nine schools are learning Polish through Junior Cycle short courses.
In 2023, 1190 students attended Polish TY classes to learn about Polish language and culture.
412 students took part in Polish Leaving Certificate classes in post-primary schools, 46 of whom participated
in blended learning classes. 161 students also attended PPLI Polish Leaving Certificate Saturday classes in
Dublin, Cork, Galway and two online Saturday classes.
PPLI teachers were also involved in events at their schools, where they and their students learned about and
celebrated Polish traditional cuisine, language, and culture. One teacher helped set up a Polish section in the
school library. Teachers of Polish provided valuable input at the Languages Connect Summit in Dublin in
October 2023, showcasing their work through workshops and poster sessions.
Polish teachers employed by PPLI attended the Languages Connect Summit in October 2023. Three teachers
delivered workshops during the Summit, and four teachers prepared posters on different aspects of teaching
and learning Polish. For the first time ever, they also prepared a stand and presented Polish within the Irish
education system at the Summit.
