Teacher/Tutor Training
A total of 15 online information and training workshops were
hosted over the three terms. Some of the MFL and ISL
good practice and contributing to the creation of banks of
resources, now available to access online, with more resources
being added over time. The sessions for ISL tutors were
sessions. In addition to the above, and to help visiting tutors
work in co-operation with their hosting teachers, a collection
of suggestions for effective collaboration was also made
available. This resource was designed to help teachers plan
together, support one another, and embed good practice
beyond the duration of the module.
Some schools chose more than one language.
Research
Building on research conducted in 2022
with parents and guardians of primary
school pupils, qualitative research was
also conducted in early 2023 among
pupils engaged in the module. The study
involved a two-phase approach, where
pupils were interviewed before and after
the experience of the module. As part of
the research, hosting teachers were also
asked to share their observations. The
research identified that the strengths of
the module included the fun and
interactive nature, as well as the increased
awareness of diversity it brought to the
pupil population.
Feedback
Teachers find the resources provided by PPLI useful, easy to use and promoting active learning. They also
report a positive washback effect on the teaching and learning of Irish. Communication with the families was
highlighted as an area for improvement. To address that, PPLI produced an information leaflet and distributed
to all participating schools, to illustrate the aims and the opportunities offered by Say Yes to Languages to
parents and guardians.
