13 HEIs Supported
Overview:
In June 2025, PPLI issued the sixth annual call for funding applications to support Languages Connect
awareness-raising activities at third level. These grants support HEIs with the promotion of their language
programmes and encourage post-primary students to consider language study at university. Thirteen HEIs
applied and were awarded a maximum of €10,000 each in funding.
Main Aims:
•
Strengthen connections between HEIs and schools to support language learning and cultural awareness.
•
Promote language courses ofered at third level, including major, minor, and elective options.
•
Raise awareness of career pathways and study-abroad opportunities available through languages.
Activity:
HEI coordinators attended the annual HEI meeting in May to share practice and discuss upcoming initiatives.
Throughout 2025, funded HEIs undertook a wide range of awareness-raising activities. These included
contributions to #ThinkLanguages Week and participation in the annual Japan Quiz, hosted across the
University of Limerick, Dublin City University, and University College Cork. Additional activities during the
year are summarised below.
Dublin City University (DCU)
•
March-April: Hosted three on-campus events for 130 students from Lusk Community College, Loreto
College Crumlin, and Damasa College. Activities included workshops, student ambassador talks, and
guided campus tours.

December: Staf and student ambassadors visited St Aidan9s, Coláiste Choilm Swords, and the Institute of
Education to speak about language programmes and related career options.
Mary Immaculate College (MIC)
•
September: Celebrated European Day of Languages with a college-wide event featuring games and
multilingual interactions in both staf and student spaces.
•
October: Promoted language study during two Open Days, with ambassadors engaging prospective
students and families through demonstrations and informal conversations.
Maynooth University
•
January: Delivered an on-campus Language Day promoting Chinese to post-primary students from
Confey College Leixlip and Kishoge Community College.

January: Hosted an online information session for teachers and guidance counsellors.
•
April & June: Student ambassadors promoted language courses at university Open Days.
