Collaboration with Embassies and Cultural Institutes
Action: 3.A.5
Overview:
PPLI works closely with embassies and cultural institutes to identify needs in language education, explore
relevant resources and mobility opportunities for teachers and students, and develop synergies that promote
and support foreign language learning nationally.
Main Aims:
•
Explore opportunities for collaboration in areas such as language upskilling, mobility, the Foreign Language
Assistant (FLA) and English Language Assistant (ELA) schemes, #ThinkLanguages, and Culture Night.
•
Increase awareness of the importance of foreign language learning.
•
Identify regions with interest or demand for heritage-language supports.
•
Explore collaboration opportunities for providing language-upskilling supports aimed at primary teachers.
•
Provide support to citizens participating in the FLA programme.
•
Participate in international events focused on language education.
•
Disseminate PPLI supports and resources across embassy and cultural institute networks.
Activity:
Language Teaching and Learning Support and Resources:
•
PPLI supported embassies and cultural institutes with induction programmes for FLAs and visiting staf,
including sessions at the national induction for FLAs hosted by the Department of Education and Youth
and induction support for staf at the UCC Confucius Institute.
•
The Embassy of Japan supported PPLI9s application to the Japan Foundation to continue the secondment
of a dedicated Japanese Language Advisor, who remained in place through 2025.
•
PPLI enhanced the Embassy of Japan9s outreach by highlighting where Japanese is taught across Ireland
and improving communication channels with schools.
•
PPLI provided advice to the Korean Embassy on resource development for integrating Korean culture into
Irish schools.
Competitions:
•
PPLI continued its long-running collaboration with the Consejería de Educación de la Embajada de
España en Dublín, La Junta de Castilla y León, and the Spanish Tourist Ooce in Dublin to deliver the
annual Spanish video competition for ofth-year students and their teachers.
In 2025, six students and three teachers were awarded upskilling language courses in Castilla y León. The
competition strengthens linguistic and cultural competence by encouraging students to engage
creatively with Spanish language and culture.
