1 Additional Resource
Overview:
The Say Yes to Languages Open Night Toolkit provides
a suite of resources to support teachers preparing
open nights in their schools. The toolkit ofers
engaging taster activities designed to encourage
Junior Cycle uptake of modern foreign languages
(MFLs).
Main Aims:
•
Support teachers to prepare engaging activities and presentations for open nights.
•
Provide resources that help promote MFL uptake among prospective orst-year students.
Activity:
To raise awareness and support teachers using the toolkit, PPLI delivered three
Promoting MFL Uptake in Your School Communities of Practice in September 2025,
including one through Irish in collaboration with COGG (An Chomhairle um Oideachas

Gaeltachta & Gaelscolaíochta). These sessions focused on how teachers could maximise
the toolkit with incoming orst-year students.
A new Open Night Toolkit Additional Resource was developed and published in
2025. Available in English and Irish, it ofers further ideas to encourage interest in
MFLs and includes information on requesting additional whole-school support
from PPLI. A total of 109 teachers registered for the September sessions.

Impact:
•
Increased awareness among stakeholders of the range of supports available and how they can be used to
encourage language uptake.
Next Steps:
•
Provide a series of online sessions in September 2026 to support MFL uptake at entry to post-primary
school and at transition points from Junior to Senior Cycle.
•
Undertake a periodic review of the toolkit and additional resource to ensure both remain relevant,
engaging, and responsive to school needs.
