Goal 3 - Moving Forward
Building on the strong participation, positive feedback and awareness raising initiatives in
foreign languages education in 2025, PPLI will consolidate and expand its role as the
national lead in promoting the value, visibility and relevance of foreign languages.
#ThinkLanguages Week will remain the nagship national awareness-raising initiative,
providing a visible, inclusive and student centred platform for celebrating languages and
cultures. Future iterations will continue to evolve in response to feedback from teachers
and students, while retaining the core elements that have proven most efective: student
leadership, strong community engagement, creative competition, and meaningful
partnerships with higher education institutions, cultural institutes, embassies and national
agencies. Emphasis will be placed on further strengthening links between post-primary
schools, primary schools and higher education institutes to support sustained language
uptake at key transition points.
Partnership development will continue to be a central strategic priority. PPLI will deepen
collaboration with higher education institutions to ensure that awareness raising activities
are closely aligned with progression pathways, Erasmus opportunities and labour market
needs. The HEI funding model will continue to support innovative outreach, peer to peer
engagement through student ambassadors, and targeted initiatives for teachers and
guidance counsellors. Ongoing evaluation will inform how this investment delivers
national impact and supports regional access.
Collaboration with embassies and cultural institutes will be further leveraged to support
linguistic diversity, heritage languages and lesser-taught languages, while also
strengthening mobility, upskilling and assistantship pathways. These partnerships will
continue to enrich national initiatives such as #ThinkLanguages, Culture Night and teacher
upskilling programmes, and will play a key role in supporting the sustainable development
of curricular languages, particularly those with emerging capacity challenges.
PPLI will continue to prioritise targeted engagement with students, parents and guidance
counsellors through student events, career focused resources and dedicated information
sessions. The strong engagement between Languages Connect and CareersPortal.ie
highlights the importance of providing clear, accessible and up to date guidance on
language learning pathways.
Public awareness-raising initiatives, including leveraging #ThinkLanguages and Say Yes To
Languages to reach parents and communities, Culture Night, and MS Readathon, will
remain important mechanisms for reaching audiences beyond the school setting. These
initiatives support broader societal understanding of multilingualism, inclusion and
cultural diversity, reinforcing the place of languages within Ireland9s social, cultural and
economic landscape.
