Funding Schemes Addressing Language Teacher Shortages
3 MFL Teachers Upskilled

Overview:
PPLI manages two funding schemes designed to address the national shortage of qualioed language
teachers in Ireland. The Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) Teacher Upskilling Scheme provides opportunities
for teachers to upskill in a language they are qualioed in but are not currently teaching or not teaching to full
capacity. Teachers who upskill may be able to introduce the language in their school or increase its provision.
The Teaching Council Criteria Shortfall Funding Scheme supports teachers who need a small number of
credits to meet the Teaching Council requirements for registration as language teachers in Ireland.
Main aims:

Increase the number and capacity of qualioed and registered language teachers in Ireland.
•
Enable schools to activate existing qualioed capacity and introduce or expand language provision.
•
Support teachers to complete the requirements necessary for Teaching Council registration.
Activity:
MFL Teacher Upskilling Scheme
Since the scheme began in 2018, 80 applications have been approved. In 2025, three teachers availed of
upskilling opportunities—two in German and one in Italian. The scheme remains open to applications on an
ongoing basis.
Impact:
Schools involved in the scheme reported increased capacity to ofer more languages, strengthened language
provision, and improved promotion of languages. Teachers who completed an upskilling course highlighted
improved conodence and enhanced CEFR proociency levels as the most valued outcomes.
