17 School Exchanges
Overview:
The Funding for School Exchanges Scheme, introduced in 2018, provides €5,000 per year for a maximum of
three years to support approved schools in establishing new exchanges and increasing participation in
existing ones. Since its launch, almost 40 schools have received funding, with many more beneoting from
information and guidance.
Main aims:
•
Incentivise schools to establish new exchange programmes.
•
Support schools with existing exchanges to increase participation.
•
Sustain long-term partnerships with host schools abroad.
•
Showcase good practice to encourage more schools to participate in exchanges.
Activity:
Schools approved between 2018 and 2023 continued to receive support throughout 2025. Exchanges took
place across Europe and Asia, with students visiting and hosting partner schools in locations including Bercksur-Mer, Dunkirk, Lille, Ribeauvillé and Vichy (France); Barcelona and Valladolid (Spain); Landau in der Pfalz,
Niederkassel and Trostberg (Germany); and Mukogawa (Japan).
PPLI disseminates supports in relation to school exchanges at teacher events and collaborates with other
stakeholders and partners in relation to the same. For example, in June 2025, PPLI presented at the German
Teachers9 Summer School at the Goethe-Institut, providing information and addressing questions about
school exchange opportunities.
Impact:
•
Students experienced life in another education system and lived with host families abroad.
•
Hosting a partner student enabled young people to share their culture and explore parts of Ireland they
had not previously visited.
•
Exchanges ofered a unique opportunity to develop language skills and deepen understanding of the
subject.
Next steps:

•
Plan and deliver workshops on facilitating exchanges in 2026 at stakeholder events.
•
Continue supporting schools in organising exchange activities.
•
Continue funding schools already approved for the three-year scheme.
•
Encourage additional schools and teachers to apply for exchange funding and to engage with Erasmus+
opportunities through Léargas.
•
Continue leveraging digital technologies to promote increased virtual exchange activity.
