CLIL - Content and Language Integrated Learning
Action: 1.E.3
Overview:
Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is a dual-focused educational approach that integrates
language learning with content learning. It enriches students9 educational experiences by supporting
disciplinary knowledge, while simultaneously strengthening language development.
In 2025, PPLI continued to lead national eforts to promote and implement CLIL across foreign languages,
working collaboratively with stakeholders, supporting schools, and expanding professional learning
opportunities for teachers.
Main Aims:
•
Advance CLIL practices in Ireland through professional learning and collaboration.
•
Strengthen partnerships with stakeholders to establish a unioed approach to CLIL across MFL, Irish, and
content subjects.
•
Provide targeted CPD and resources for teachers and schools implementing CLIL.
•
Showcase Ireland9s leadership in CLIL at international levels, including hosting World CLIL 2025.
Activity:
CLIL Toolkit Development
A CLIL Toolkit Working Group was established in 2025 to design a practical resource that supports schools in
implementing CLIL in ways that renect their local contexts. The group is led by Professor Do Coyle, an
internationally recognised expert in CLIL, and includes representatives from PPLI, a Higher Education
Institution (HEI), Oide and four practising post-primary teachers. This collaborative approach ensures
alignment between research, policy, professional development and classroom practice.
Throughout 2025, the group held workshops and seminars exploring key CLIL principles. Participating
teachers piloted emerging concepts in their own classroom settings and provided iterative feedback. This
practice-based development process ensures the CLIL Toolkit is grounded in authentic classroom experience
and adaptable across diverse school contexts. The Toolkit is anticipated for publication in June 2026.
Engagement with Initial Teacher Education (ITE) Students
PPLI delivered targeted guest lectures to ITE students in 2025, focusing on the pedagogical foundations of
CLIL and its application in Irish classrooms. These engagements aimed to prepare future teachers to integrate
CLIL practices into their teaching and to increase awareness of PPLI9s supports for innovative languageteaching methodologies.
World CLIL 2025 — 13-14 June 2025
PPLI facilitated World CLIL 2025 in partnership with Maynooth University and Queen9s University Belfast. This
two-day international conference brought together teachers, researchers, policymakers and practitioners
from 26 countries to explore CLIL research, classroom practice and policy developments under the theme:
CLIL Connects: the role of CLIL across subject disciplines, supporting and developing pluriliteracies,
plurilingual and pluricultural competencies.
