Languages Provision
PPLI Development Oocers
PPLI employs 49 Development Oocers to support the teaching of the more recently introduced and lesser
taught languages across post primary schools in Ireland. This includes Japanese, Lithuanian, Mandarin
Chinese, Polish, Portuguese and Russian as curricular languages, Korean delivered as a Transition Year
module, and Romanian provided as a non-curricular language support due to the large numbers of heritage
language speakers.
These Development Oocers are qualioed teachers who are deployed to schools on an ex-quota peripatetic
basis to support language provision. This approach may be understood as a bridging programme that
enables schools to introduce new language subjects with minimal risk and resourcing. Where provision is
successful, schools may subsequently employ the teacher directly through additional allocation, a separate
scheme facilitated by PPLI.
