In-School Provision of Languages
Foreign languages beyond the traditional European focus
The provision of languages not traditionally ofered within the language curriculum in Ireland, including
Japanese and Mandarin Chinese, enables students to engage with linguistic and cultural contexts beyond
Europe. Learning these languages provides access to diverse cultural traditions and contemporary societies
in East Asia, supporting students in developing global awareness and intercultural understanding. In
addition, engagement with these languages can support students in acquiring linguistic and cultural
knowledge relevant to areas including technology, innovation, and international exchange, thereby
broadening educational horizons and supporting preparation for participation in an increasingly global
context.
Home and heritage languages and plurilingual development
Support for the teaching and learning of home and heritage languages, for example Polish, Lithuanian, and
Portuguese, renects a commitment to more inclusive and plurilingual approaches to language education.
These languages also play a role in supporting students from diverse linguistic backgrounds, including those
with recent migration experiences. Facilitating access to these languages within the formal school curriculum
allows students to build on existing linguistic resources while developing academic literacy in their home or
heritage language. This aligns with recent curriculum developments that emphasise plurilingual competence
and encourage learners to draw on their full linguistic repertoires.
