Introduction to PPLI
Post-Primary Languages Ireland (PPLI) is a dedicated unit providing expertise and support for foreign languages
education in Ireland. PPLI is fully funded by the Department of Education and Youth and was originally set up
in September 2000 with a remit of diversifying, enhancing, and expanding the teaching of languages in secondlevel schools throughout Ireland. This remains core to its remit with a focus on enhancing and broadening the
opportunities available for learning foreign languages that are relevant to Ireland’s future cultural, social, and
economic needs.
PPLI exists to support the implementation of key actions under ‘Languages Connect - Ireland’s Strategy for
Foreign Languages in Education 2017-2026’. In addition to the important aspects of implementation which
relate to languages in education, there is also a role for PPLI in awareness raising, employer engagement and
languages in society. An additional part of its role is to conduct applied research that informs and supports
policy.
A broader remit now includes foreign languages support for the primary sector. This includes provision of the
‘Say Yes to Languages’ module in schools, the main aim of which is to prepare the ground for the implementation
of the redeveloped Primary Language Curriculum. Support for foreign languages at primary level recently also
includes foreign language upskilling for primary teachers and the provision of a body of resources that will
support teachers with implementation of the new curriculum in the context of Modern Foreign Languages.
