Languages Provision
Activity:
In May 2025, students from face-to-face classes at Larkin Community College took part in a Multicultural Day
that celebrated the diversity and cultural richness of the Leaving Certiocate Language classes community.
Students showcased their talents through singing and dancing performances and engaged in interactive
activities, including a quiz that added energy and enjoyment to the day. The event provided an opportunity
for students to share aspects of their cultural backgrounds in a supportive and inclusive environment.
On 25 October, students from the Dublin based Polish language class took part in a cultural workshop at
Dublin9s Polish Library, Biblary. The workshop was led by artists from Poland9s Avangart Art Foundation.
Students had the opportunity to prepare traditional rosół, learn the polonez dance and explore vocal
techniques with professional opera singers. The event provided a valuable opportunity for students to
experience Polish culture in a practical and engaging way.
Impact:
•
In September, the number of students registered in the Leaving Certiocate Language classes programme
provided by PPLI for the 2025-2026 school year increased to 758 students. This number includes new
registrations for ofth year and returning students to sixth year.

Students are provided with the opportunity to access a Leaving Certiocate subject that is not available in
their schools.
•
Students who live in less populated areas are given access to equity of provision enabling them to
prepare for a curricular or non-curricular language where there is neither a critical mass of students nor an
available teacher.
•
Students have the opportunity to take an additional foreign language for Leaving Certiocate, something
which can be diocult to access within a school timetable.
•
Students with heritage languages have the opportunity to present for a subject at Leaving Certiocate. This
ofers them the opportunity to have their competency in a language recognised resulting in wider access
to education pathways.
•
Students are supported with home-language maintenance which supports the students9 well-being in
turn impacting academic achievement.
•
The development of plurilingual and pluricultural competence is an important aspect of Leaving
Certiocate Language classes. This encourages social cohesion and inclusion of both heritage and nonheritage learners.
Next Steps:
•
Continue to ofer Leaving Certiocate Language classes in Dublin, Cork, and Galway
•
Continue to expand online classes to cater for students who are unable to access face-to-face classes due
to location
•
Continue to explore innovative models of provision to support home language maintenance and
diversiocation of foreign languages capacity
•
Introduce Arabic online as a language available in the Leaving Certiocate Language Classes Programme
