Yes to Languages
Overview:
The Say Yes to Languages module continued into its ofth year in 2025, ofering primary pupils and teachers a
structured introduction to additional languages and cultures alongside English and Irish. Now in Phase Two,
the focus is on preparing schools and teachers for the introduction of modern foreign languages within the
Primary Language Curriculum.
The ten-hour module is delivered during school hours to ofth and sixth classes, either by the class teacher or
by visiting tutors working in collaboration with school staf. Schools select a language based on foreign
language teaching capacity, school context, and pupil demographics. Say Yes to Languages is delivered
across two academic terms.
Main Aims:
•
Raise awareness of the importance of modern foreign languages in developing transversal skills.
•
Prepare schools for the implementation of the redeveloped Primary Language Curriculum.
•
Encourage the uptake of foreign languages at post-primary level.
•
Support the implementation of Languages Connect: Ireland9s Strategy for Foreign Languages in
Education 2017-2026.
•
Contribute to improved literacy in English and Irish.
Activity:
This year 1,344 primary schools registered to take part, with 20% participating for the orst time. Schools
selected a language based on teaching capacity, school context, and pupil demographics. PPLI managed
grant payments, resource distribution, tutor training, promotional activity and day-to-day queries, as well as
facilitating feedback collection through surveys and school visits. PPLI also delivered training sessions for
new and experienced tutors, class teachers, school leaders and Irish Sign Language tutors. Over 1,025
attended across eleven online workshops. ISL tutor sessions were designed and delivered in collaboration
with the Centre for Deaf Studies at Trinity College Dublin.
Languages chosen by schools ranged widely. French and Spanish were the most selected, followed by uptake
in German, Italian, ISL, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Portuguese, Polish, Romanian and Ukrainian. Some
schools opted for more than one language.
