Overview:
#ThinkLanguages is an annual Transition Year (TY) celebration of languages and cultures facilitated by PPLI.
Since its launch in 2018, the festival has expanded each year, with increasing participation from schools,
partners, and community stakeholders. In 2025, the event continued as a week-long celebration, ofering
interactive workshops, inspiring talks, quizzes, and cultural activities nationwide.
Main Aims:
•
Celebrate languages across schools, higher education institutions, and national partner organisations.
•
Support teachers in showcasing the value of languages within and beyond the classroom.
•
Engage and inspire TY students by highlighting languages in their local communities and in global
contexts.
•
Promote inclusion and awareness of the personal, social, cultural, and professional beneots of language
learning.
•
Encourage students to choose languages at Senior Cycle and continue into third-level education.
•
Strengthen connections between schools and their wider communities to raise awareness of language
skills.
Activity:
Now in its eighth year, #ThinkLanguages Week took place in schools, universities and other venues
nationwide from 17 - 21 November 2025. Over 240 schools were involved in the nagship event, with over
21,000 TY students celebrating languages and cultures in their school and locality.
Resources and Teacher Support
Two online information sessions for teachers were held in September and two Communities of Practice in
October to provide input and support in relation to project management of the festival in schools, as well as
to provide an opportunity to share ideas and experiences of previous festivals.
PPLI associates shared their #ThinkLanguages experiences and guided both new and returning teachers with
tips on how to successfully run the event in their schools. A total of 84 participants attended the information
sessions and 59 attended the Communities of Practice. For those who could not attend these meetings, a
series of #ThinkLanguages Teacher Tips videos were shared online.
A full communication programme with schools took place from August to December via the Languages
Connect website, social media channels, a dedicated Facebook group, and ongoing email correspondence
informing of registration deadlines, partner oferings, resource availability and competition details.
