The Great Language Apprentice Challenge
Teachers’ Notes
- To discover more about the business links between the countries using the target
language and Ireland.
- To research vocabulary linked to business/marketing terminology and general
business vocabulary.
- To learn about the beneûts of speaking foreign languages in the world of work.
- To learn about third-level courses that combine a language and a skill.

Expected time

Teachers need at least one class period to introduce the task and show students key
links and resources.
Thereafter, the task is üexible and can be completed in school or at home. This is
useful where digital access varies between schools or households.
For example, teachers could:
- Ask students to complete selected or all tasks.
- Make the Challenge a short-term class focus, providing class time for completion.
- Ask students to complete the Challenge at home.
- Introduce the Challenge at the start of a term and have students add one
completed item each week to a portfolio.
- Showcase completed challenges during #ThinkLanguages week.
Task outline
Presentation of research:
Teachers should decide how they would like students to present their ûndings from
the World of Work research. This may depend on the time available, access to digital
tools and the teacher’s preferred mode of assessment.
Students could be asked to:
- Create a presentation (for example, a PowerPoint, or another digital tool) that
summarises their completed research tasks.
- Compile a portfolio that includes the completed tasks, screenshots, written answers
and reüections. This can be digital or paper-based depending on school context.
- Share selected elements of their research in small groups before completing a full
presentation or portfolio.
Teachers may choose to use:
Peer assessment forms, allowing students to review and give feedback on each
other’s work.
Teacher assessment forms, where formal assessment of the students’ research and
presentation is required.
