About PPLI/
Languages Connect
PPLI is a dedicated unit supporting
foreign language education in Ireland,
funded by the Department of Education
and Youth. It was established in 2000
to diversify, enhance and expand
language teaching. Its remit includes
primary and post-primary education.
PPLI/Languages Connect also promotes
the societal value of languages through
awareness campaigns and applied
research that informs national policy.
Our diverse team of experts in
education, languages, teaching, and
communications delivers high-impact
projects and partners with a wide range
of stakeholders – from schools and
teachers to government departments,
community partners and education
agencies.
Policy Context
The Primary Curriculum Framework
(2023) and the redeveloped Primary
School Curriculum (2025) support
the introduction of modern foreign
languages (MFL) education in
stages three and four, as part of
the Language Specification.
