Language Taster –
Bringing New Languages to Primary Schools
As part of the Gaisce Community Involvement, you could volunteer to design and deliver a 6-week
language taster course to a local primary school class. This project will give younger pupils a fun, ageappropriate introduction to learning new languages and promote language learning within the
community.
Gaisce participants will dedicate 13 hours for six lessons:
1 hour to plan each lesson in advance
1 hour to teach it in the local primary school
Each week, you will choose a fun, interactive theme. Lessons should last 40–60 minutes and be
adapted for 3rd–6th class pupils.
Week Examples
Week 1:
Week 2 – 5:
Discuss permissions with your school
management and ask your language
teacher for their support. Once you have
approval on your side, contact the local
primary school and ask if they are
interested.
Prepare the weekly lesson plans, using your language
text books, online resources, and your own ideas.
Source simple phrases, songs, games, and visuals to
make the lessons fun and memorable.
Schedule dates for the 6 lessons.
Get prepared by doing some micro teaching amongst
your peers. Practice some of what you have prepared
and make changes and improvements as needed
Weekly themes could include:
Week 6:
• Greetings and introductions
• Colours and numbers
