Non-fiction Picture Books - Flipbook - Page 2
Introduction
Picture books provide a rich and flexible foundation for developing language, literacy,
and intercultural awareness, which can support the learning and teaching
of modern foreign languages in primary schools (henceforth L3). Picture books
can be a powerful tool to foster within children and teachers a lifelong interest
in language learning for personal enjoyment and enrichment.
The books on this list have been selected from award-winning non-fiction picture
book catalogues, curated by national sections of the International Board on Books for
Young People (IBBY) and by the Internationale Jugendbibliothek.
This list includes a limited number of books in French, Spanish, Italian and German
to reflect the languages that, according to our research, most primary teachers in
Ireland are familiar with. However, the Further resources and links section includes
links to international organisations that regularly publish catalogues of new books for
young people from over 80 diffe ent countries.
This resource was developed in collaboration with Children’s Books Ireland.
