Matching to country of origin
If all modern foreign languages (MFLs) are promoting from the same classroom, and the room is print-rich
with diferent images of places from the respective countries, then consider asking the visiting students to
match items to the country of origin as displayed in the room e.g. cheeses, famous buildings, personalities.
This could also be used to introduce language items - word on one card and an image on another.
Working with former students
Work with former students to capture their experiences with languages in their studies/work, the aim of
which would be to showcase the impact of language learning through their experiences and presented via
video interviews and posters.
Preparation steps:
• Identify former students:
Reach out to alumni who studied languages at your school and have used them in further study or their
careers.
Aim for a diverse range of oelds (e.g., business, travel, education, international work).
• Conduct interviews:
Arrange short video interviews (2–3 minutes) where former students discuss how language learning
helped them, memorable experiences using languages, and advice for current students.
• Create posters:
Design posters featuring key quotes, photos, and summaries from the interviews.
Include the student’s name, graduation year, and current role or oeld.
• Coordinate with the school’s IT team:
Submit digital versions of the videos and posters to be uploaded to the school website.
Provide a short write-up introducing the activity and its purpose.
• Set up for open night:
Display posters in a visible area near the Languages department.
Set up a screen or monitor to loop the video interviews.
Have staf or student ambassadors
