Why encourage your child to learn
your language?
Portuguese is a curricular language
for Leaving Certificate in Ireland!
The ûrst language a child learns, the home
language, plays a very important role in the
development of the brain. The home
language continues to be important as the
child grows up, making it easier for them to
learn other languages and school subjects in
general.
• Introduced to the curriculum in 2020, and
examined for the ûrst time in 2022,
students may now choose to study
Portuguese for examination at Leaving
Certiûcate higher and ordinary levels:

Knowing your home language will help your
child to:
• Develop skills like observation, analysis,
reüection, questioning, and exploration
• Transfer skills to learning not only
languages, but other subjects like maths
and science
• Increase your child’s understanding of a
topic and help them to develop their
English language skills
• Support for schools who propose
introducing Portuguese as a new subject is
available from Post-Primary Languages
Ireland (PPLI), a unit of the Department of
Education and Youth, which supports the
teaching, learning, and development of
foreign languages in Ireland.
• Students who do not have access to a
teacher may have the option of attending
PPLI Saturday classes or they may choose
to study Portuguese independently.
• Have conûdence in who they are
• Remain connected to their wider family,
e.g., grandparents, cousins etc. by enabling
them to communicate with conûdence in
the home language
• Develop an appreciation for the culture and
traditions of their culture of origin and feel
at home in your country of origin
