PPLI Audit of Foreign Languages - Flipbook - Page 52
JAPANESE:
21 schools would like to offer Japanese. Comments focus on an interest in Japanese, and a number of schools
have had a positive experience of Japanese through PPLI.
• Have the skill set if built on.
• Demand
• To increase subject options
• It is taught in Ty and some students wish to continue it
• Significant interest in Japanese - students from this school have, for many years, enrolled on the PPLI's Saturday
Japanese classes.
• Our students have a huge interest in Japanese and have indicated an interest in Chinese. Also, given the trend
towards Asian markets and the expansion of Chinese trade, it would be a benefit to our students to take
advantage of these trends.
• Meet what we perceive to be the demands of modern life
• There is an interest at Third Level and I feel that it would make a good option from TY onwards
• Present a more global perspective on languages and learning - not so euro-centric.
• Cepaim go bhfuil sé tábhachtach go bhfuil daoine óga in Éirinn in ann go leor teangacha a labhairt (I think it is
important that young people in Ireland are able to speak many languages)
• Éagsúil ón soláthar teangacha faoi láthair. Bhí Seapáinis againn san Idirbhliain agus don Ardteist faoin Languages
Initiative ach ní raibh an t-éileamh mór go leor le leanúint leis. (Different from the languages currently available.
Japanese was available in transition year agus for the Leaving Certificate under the Languages Initiative but the
demand was not high enough to continue with it.)
• Tá taithí againn le roinnt blianta anuas leis an Languages Initiative. Baineann daltai na hidirbhliana an taitneamh
aisti. Ba mhaith linn í a chur ar fáil go rialta ag leibhéal na hardteistiméireachta (We have a number of years’
experience with the Languages Initiative. Transition year students really enjoy it. We would like to provide it
regularly at Leaving Certificate level)
